Sexual Health Services In Bath

From a GP

Most contraceptive services are provided from GP practices but you do not have to go to your own GP for this service. You can register with a different GP for contraceptive services while still seeing your own GP for all other medical matters. The GPs who provide contraceptive services are listed in the GP directory. Your GP can also advise you about male and female sterilization: vasectomy and tubal ligation.

SAFE Accreditation

When looking for sexual health services look for the SAFE logo as this tell you the services is accredited by the Bath Primary Care Trust.

C Card Scheme - Young people under 20 can obtain a C card (free condoms) from a variety of places (such as the school nurse, Connexions, Youth Service, Off the Record) and then present it to the CASH service receptionist in order to obtain up to 20 free condoms each month. Emergency Contraception

It is possible to prevent pregnancy if you had sex without contraception, or you think the method you did use may not have worked:

  • you can take two special doses of the "the pill" that must be started within 3 days of unprotected sex.
  • you can have an intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD) fitted within 5 days of unprotected sex.

For this service you can go to:

  • your own GP or another GP practice
  • any Specialist Contraception Clinic
  • any Young Person's Clinic

Emergency Hormonal Contraception (Levonelle) tablets may now be purchased from most community pharmacies by women aged 16 and over. Patients will need to provide the pharmacist, who will handle the request personally, with detailed information in order that the medicine is only supplied in suitable cases. Emergency contraception tablets work within the first 72 hours after unprotected sex, but they are best taken as soon as possible after the event occurs as the effectiveness decreases with time. Detailed professional guidance has been issued by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and a training programme has been attended by over 200 pharmacists in the local area. Emergency contraception tablets supplied at a pharmacy cost around £20. If a pharmacy does not supply emergency contraception they will be able to direct you to an alternative source.
