► Academic Appeals

 Academic Appeals

If you're reading this its pretty likely you'll be thinking you have been treated unfairly and want to say something about it. It's firstly very important you don't get this muddled with a complaint, the academic appeal is inherntly targeted at an instance that has effected your grades, not necessarily your experience.

It is very difficult to provide generic advice for appeals as each case is unique. It is important to remember whilst reading these pages that the Union should be your first port of call on appeal. We can't stress enough the impact we can have on your appeal.

These pages act as a guide to get you prepared for the type of perspective you would need to take when considering an Academic Appeal.

The ‘Academic Appeals Procedure’ is in place to offer students the opportunity to oppose a decision concerning your academic studies.

If for any case you feel the achievement of your course was / is restricted through no fault of your own it is advised you appeal these conditions if they are not considered when grading you.

The most likely issues for appeal surround three areas:

1) Mitigating Circumstances

Where the student in question has been ill / had a family emergency or encountered any unfortunate situation which has distracted them from their studies.

2) Administrative Error

An administrative error generally covers areas of miscommunication. For example you may not have recieved any notification that you had an assessment and therefore missed it without any fault of your own.

3) Examination Error

This title covers any procedural irregularities when conducting your examination. For example your exam not being run in accordance to what is stated in the module handbook.

You will not be able to appeal against 'Academic Judgement'. So for example you would not be able to appeal on the case that you thought your mark should be higher than the grade awarded.

The University has a number of external monitoring systems which aim to uphold academic quality and standards accross the industry and these are considered nationally to be adequate at doing so.
