► Tuition Fees!

Tuitition Fees

October the 21st! Put it in your diaries and get ready for the biggest student campaign you’ll ever see at University.

NUS are coordinating a huge student protest in Bristol on Wednesday the 21st. Why? Against the proposals to raise the tuition fees up to £10,000 per year!

Bath Spa has jumped on board with this initiative as have University of Bath, University of Bristol, University of Exeter and UWE.

Hundreds of students will descend the streets of Bristol with one goal, raise awareness of student debt.

What’s the issue? Students are paying far too much for education. The financial commitment that has to be made to go to University has tripled on tuition fees alone. By paying this extra money each year, it dramatically impedes on the whole University experience.

What’s worse is there is no demonstrable improvement in the education we’re receiving. What’s worse is that some countries i.e. Ireland, Sweden and Wales don’t charge any tuition fees because they see education as a right, not a privilege. By raising tuition fees, England will end up seeing a university market, where only the rich will be able to decide where to go.

Understandably the UK government aren’t going to listen to a system where stop paying anything towards their tuition. However the system they use can be a lot fairer. We need a new system which doesn’t continue to build up on broken foundations. One like NUS have proposed in their new Blueprint. Where students don’t have to pay fees up front, where they only pay back in relation to what they earn.

We need to show the government that they cannot continue to ignore the needs of higher education students, and that it is inhumane to only allow the wealthy students to choose which university to go to.

Join Bath Spa along with every other University in the South-West on Wednesday October the 21st for the Bristol Town Take over! Free busses will be put on and you’ll meet tons of new people if nothing else!

More information will be coming your way regarding this event so keep your eyes and ears open!
