► Voluntary Service Overseas

Voluntary Service Overseas - VSO

VSO is an international development charity that promotes volunteering to fight global poverty and disadvantage. They bring people together to share skills, creativity and learning to build a fairer world. The below opportunities are targeted at 17 - 25 year-olds but if you're over 25, there are many other ways to get involved with VSO; check out their website for further information.

Global Xchange.
Global Xchange is a six-month, team-based exchange programme which gives young people from different countries an opportunity to volunteer together and make a practical contribution where it is needed in local communities. You work in teams of 18 people, half from the UK and half from an exchange country; 3 months is spent in the UK and 3 months in the exchange country.

Global Xchange:
  • Pays for your training, visas, travel, medical checks, injections, accommodation and food.
  • Provides you with an allowance.
  • Supports you through trained and experienced Programme Supervisors.
  • Don't ask you to pay for the experience. Instead, they ask you to fundraise £600 towards the cost.

Application procedures open 6 months before programmes start.
Youth for Development - YFD.
YfD is a one-year overseas programme giving young volunteers an opportunity to work with VSO's partners and programmes. It is a valuable experience for those interested in longer term development work and the promotion of international understanding.
Volunteers:
  • Spend 12 months living and working with VSO partners in any one of 34 countries worldwide.
  • Take ownership of the process by letting VSO know where their strengths lie so that the programme can be tailored to contribute to their personal and professional development.
  • Fundraise £900.
  • Complete a Global Education Project which raises awareness of global issues, challenges stereotypes and promotes international understanding. The project begins in the UK, continues overseas and is completed on return to the UK.
YfD:
  • Pays for your training, visas, travel, medical checks, injections and accommodation.
  • Gives training and support to ensure volunteers are fully prepared.
  • Provides a modest living allowance.
  • Matches volunteers to a placement based on their skills and experience.
  • Helps volunteers to identify and achieve personal development goals.
  • Provides support when volunteers return to the UK.
Applications for YfD open in October every year, closing in early January.

In addition, VSO arranges:

  • Challenges: Treks worldwide in places such as the Himalayas, Peru, Nepal, China and Kilimanjaro.
  • Campaigns and Supporter Groups: Opportunities to make a difference in your local area by promoting and supporting the work of VSO.
