Union Transport
The Students’ Union currently has one minibus and a 7 seater car for Union Activities. With the large number of student activities, planning ahead is very important. At least two weeks notice should be given in order to check availability. To qualify to become a driver for the Students’ Union, you must be over 21, have a clean licence and have been driving for 3 years. You must then complete the Minibus Test Certificate Application Form, hand it into the office along with copies of your paper and card licence and arrange a convenient time to take the test. Clubs / Societies will be charged 30p per mile from their Union funds
Notice of Requirement
Adequate notice of transport requirements must be given. At lest two week’s notice should be given in order to check availability especially if weekend hire is required. It may be necessary for repairs/servicing to be carried out prior to your journey especially if it is a long one, in which case we would like to know your travel plans as soon as possible. To book the minibus for your Club / Societies, you need to complete the Minibus Booking Form and hand it into the SU office.
Becoming a Minibus Driver
To qualify to become a driver for the Students’ Union minibus, you must be over 21, have a clean licence and have been driving for 3 years. You must then complete the Minibus Test Certificate Application Form, hand it into the office along with copies of your paper and card licence and arrange a convenient time to take the test. You may not drive an S.U. minibus if you have not presented your Driving Licence to the Students Union together with the declaration form (re: health, convictions etc – this form is available from the Students’ Union).
Certificates of Competence
No-one may drive Students’ Union vehicles unless they have undertaken a driving assessment. In order to be assessed, please contact Tim Holden. The assessment involves a short evaluation of your driving skills and ensures that you are aware of safety procedures. On successful completion of the assessment, a Certificate of Competence will be held on file by the S.U. Keys will not be issued to anyone who has not gained this certificate.
Refuelling
Minibuses must be returned to University after use with a full tank of diesel. Fuel can be obtained from garages with the Allstar Card facility. The minibus must be refuelled by the hirer before returning it to the Students’ Union. Failure to do so will result in a £20 penalty being charged to the appropriate club/society.
Breakdown Service
The S.U. has arranged breakdown cover the AA. In the event of a breakdown (or accident) call the telephone number given in the driver’s file (handed to you with the bus keys). Breakdown assistance will be provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year in the
Vehicle
Whilst the vehicle is on hire to you, you are responsible for ensuring that the minibus is properly secured before leaving it unattended.
Routine Checking and Cleaning
Whilst the minibus is in your care, you must ensure that the oil and water levels are maintained and that the air pressure of the tyres is correct, especially when carrying heavy loads.
Keep the Minibus Clean
Before returning the minibus to the Students’ Union, please ensure that the vehicle is clean (i.e. rubbish removed from inside the bus). Failure to do so will result in a £20 penalty being charged to the appropriate club/society.
