Bath Spa Student Academic Reps

Whether you’re a philosopher, a dancer, an environmental biologist or artist you have influence over the running of your course.

HOW?

By becoming a Student Academic Representative for your subject.

Student Representation within the University is vital and everysubject should have at least one Student Academic Representative (StAR) per subject per year.

As a Student Academic Rep you have the opportunity to voice concerns of your fellow peers and to ensure that the student voice is heard from department level right up to the highest University Committee.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

As a Student Academic Rep you can:

  • make real change with issues such as module choice, future course structures, personal tutorial support, assessment feedback, library resources etc.
  • campaign and raise any issues of concern that you come across and believe the Union should be taking action on
  •  talk to, and listen to fellow students
  • bridge the gap between staff and students
  • attend University and Union meetings -raise issues and needs of your school/subject
  • keep students updated with the results of these meetings

Student Academic Representatives (StARs) can either be elected or volunteer to represent their subject at Staff/Student Liaison Committees. These committees meet at least once a term and are a discussion forum where staff meet with Student Academic Reps.

  • Involvement - To be involved with the Union, understand current issues, campaigns and raise awareness.
  • Training - These sessions will enable you to learn and develop your role and skills. We’ll even put on transport if you don’t study at the site where we’ll be holding the training! Online training is also available.
  • It’s rewarding! You have the chance to really make a difference on behalf of your fellow students and future generations at Bath Spa.
  • StAR Awards Be recognised for your achievements as a StAR and you could win £150 as StAR of the Year.
  • A skills certificate and…..that all important buzz word - Employability!

When you leave university, it is widely recognised that employers are looking for more than just a qualification from graduates and prospective employees; they are looking for motivated individuals with proven skills. Extra-curricular activities are highly valued as an indication of wider life skills.
