Bring an Icebreaker: When you arrive at your halls of residence you will find yourself surrounded by people you have never met before, and unless you are a very confident individual, it is a very daunting situation. One tip I would recommend is to bring an ‘icebreaker’ meaning something you can use as a means of starting conversation. A perfect example of this is a box of chocolates, by offering your new house mates chocolate, you are giving off a friendly first impression and it’s a perfect excuse to say hello.
Welcome Party: On Sunday the 21st there is a welcome party at the Newton Park Students' Union bar and we urge you all to come along as it is the perfect opportunity to meet people and realise that everyone is in the same position. However it is important to remember that although it is tempting to drink away your inhibitions and get a bit of Dutch courage, first impressions last and although after having a hard and possibly stressful day you may want to let your hair down a bit, no-one wants to be remembered as ‘the drunk one’ from the first night.
Food: Although you don’t want to be dragging lots of food up with you along with the rest of your belongings, it is worth thinking about how you are going to get food at least for that first evening. If your parents have been kind enough to drive you up to University, it may well be worth asking if they can take you food shopping before they leave.
