NUS

NUS are one of Europe’s largest democratic organisations.  It has a massive responsibility for representation and campaigning on a national basis, as well as supporting Students’ Unions on a local basis. You may be aware of the NUS Extra discount card, with deals at Odeon, Superdrug, Amazon and elsewhere, but NUS is much, much more.

Bath Spa University Students’ Union are affiliated to NUS and benefit from the political and commercial benefits membership provides.

NUS core values...

Equality

NUS believe there should be equality of opportunity for everyone to participate fully in a society that celebrates diversity.

Democracy

NUS policies and priorities must be student-led and students’ union-focused through building open, transparent and accessible democratic structures.

Collectivism

Students and Students’ Unions are more effective when they organise together locally, nationally and internationally: unity is our strength.

How NUS Work

NUS’ National Executive Council is comprised of national officers, some full time but mostly part time. Together they form the body that runs NUS, carrying out campaign work, supervising research and enacting policy passed at Annual Conference.

National Conference is where most of these officers, including the President, Secretary, Treasurer and the three Vice Presidents (Education, Welfare and Further Education) are elected.

The rest of the NEC are elected at other relevant student conferences. For example, the Black Students’ Officer is elected by Black students each Spring, and the President of NUS Scotland is elected by students at NUS Scotland conference.

National Conference involves close to a thousand students, and takes place each March or April. Besides electing the national leadership for the following year, it also passes policy on what NUS should be campaigning on and so shapes its priorities.

How You Can Get Involved

The key way is by submitting policy to national conference or by attending Conference as one of Bath Spa’s representatives. For further information about submitting policy to NUS and representing Bath Spa at NUS conference please contact the Union President             su-president@bathspa.ac.uk

Attending National Conference – Elections for NUS delegate coincide with the Bath Spa’s Union general election. Each Students’ Union has a delegation based on the number of students they have. Bath Spa has a total of three delegates.
