Investors in Diversity

Our Investors in Diversity journey began in 2013 when we launched our old Strategic Plan, which placed equalities and diversity at the heart of our ambitions. This commitment has been strengthened in our new BIG Plan 2016-2020.

Over the last 4 years, we have been working with the National Centre for Diversity to challenge ourselves to make sure we are not just ticking boxes and that our approach would really put equalities at the heart of our business. We recognised that this isn't just the right thing to do; it is fundamental part of our mission to be relevant and fair to ALL our members.

In March 2014 the Union was awarded Investors in Diversity accreditation at level 2. You can read the full report from the Investors in Diversity National Office here.

At the beginning of 2016 the Union was thrilled to be named in the National Centre for Diversity’s Top 100 organisations in the UK for its work in this field.

However we are not complacent about these achievements and fundamentally believe we have a role to play in challenging unfairness and discrimination wherever we see it.

We have been working with the National Centre over the past few months to become accredited Leaders in Diversity, reinforcing our view that equalities should be at the core of a socially responsible and ethical society in the 21st century.

In May 2016 and January 2017 we undertook two sets of surveys. These helped us to understand exactly how our members and partners feel about whether the Union really is an inclusive organisation that champions equalities and diversity.

We do try but acknowledge that we may not always get things right. It doesn’t matter how we see ourselves … it is your views that matter.

Feedback from these surveys has now informed our Action Plan for the next 2 years and will continue to ensure the Union champions the importance of the equality of opportunity for all our members. Our ambition is to be able to build upon our work to date and reinforce our view that equalities should be at the core of the Union as a socially responsible and ethical organisation in the 21st century.

In March 2017 Union was very proud to have been awarded Leaders in Diversity accreditation by the National Centre. You can read the full report here.

Furthermore, we were very proud to once again have been named in the list of the Top 100 organisations in the UK (up an impressive 67 places to number 28!) and to have been named as Students' Union of the Year 2017 at the National Centre for Diversity Grand Awards 2017.
