Governing Documents and Policies

The Union is run for students by students. It is an independent charity, registered with the Charity Commission (registration number 1139037).
Four Sabbatical Officers and four Student Officers are elected annually and serve as trustees on the Board of Trustees, supported by four External Trustees. Two student trustees are also appointed annually by Student Council to bring their knowledge to the Board and its sub-committees. The Board employs a team of staff to bring their professional expertise to the Union and manage its activities on a day to day basis.
The Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, budget and governance of the Union. Its work is supported by a number of sub committees and the Student Council. The Committees can also include Lay Members who bring additional professional expertise to the team but do not have voting rights of trustees.
The Student Council is the principal means of consulting on a regular basis with students. The Student Council can recommend policy changes and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees for approval.
If that seems a bit complex take a look at the democratic structure diagram!
The way the Union is governed is set out in its constitution and bylaws. The Union also has a number of policies which detail how it works and how it meets its legal obligations.
