Governing Documents and Policies

The Union is run for students by students. It is an independent charity, registered with the Charity Commission (registration number 1139037).

Four Sabbatical Officers and four Student Officers are elected annually. The Sabbatical Officers serve as trustees on the Board of Trustees, alongside four student trustees and four External Trustees. The Board employs a team of staff to bring their professional expertise to the Union and manage its activities on a day to day basis.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, budget and governance of the Union. Its work is supported by a number of sub committees and the Student Council. The Committees can also include co-opted members who bring additional professional expertise to the team but do not have voting rights of trustees.

The Democracy & Scrutiny Committee is the principal means of consulting on a regular basis with students. The Committee can set policy and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees for approval.

If that seems a bit complex take a look at the democratic structure diagram!

The way the Union is governed is set out in its constitution and bylaws. The Union also has a number of policies which detail how it works and how it meets its legal obligations.
