External Trustees

Do something extraordinary …. become a Trustee at Bath Spa University Students’ Union

This is a really exciting opportunity to use your skills, knowledge and experience to make a positive difference to the lives of students at the University. Students’ Unions are independent charities with trustee boards like no other; with a fast pace of change and a closeness to beneficiaries that make this a unique and rewarding experience that can add to your own professional or personal development.

We are looking for external trustees who would relish the idea of giving something back and supporting the next generation. In particular we are looking for trustees with experience of:

  • Higher Education, in particular the drivers of student experience
  • Audit and Governance
  • Legal knowledge of company/charity law
  • Community relations

This experience may have been gained in the public, private or ‘not for profit’ sectors. You would work closely with the CEO and officers to share your expertise. Each External Trustee is appointed to the Board and its sub committees for terms of 4 years. In total this requires attendance at 6-8 meetings per year. The roles are voluntary, although expenses are paid.

Student Trustees 2019-20

We have four vacancies for student trustees to join our Board for the next academic year (from July 2019 to June 2020). Each post holder would be a member of the Union’s Board of Trustees and one or more of its sub committees.

Student trustees must be a student at the time of their appointment and continue to be a student during their term of office.

The time commitment required is to attend approximately 10 meetings scheduled for the year ahead and reading papers in preparation for meetings. Most meetings happen in the early evening.

You should run for this role if you:

  • Ensure students are at the heart of every decision the Union takes
  • Want to ensure that the Union is well run and manages its resources effectively
  • Want to take active role to ensure that all Bath Spa students have the best possible university experience

What will you gain from being a trustee?

This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in leading a business with an estimated annual turnover of £1.4m. You may wish to gain practical skills to enhance your career goals or gain more experience to help you establish your own business after university.

Being a trustee is a voluntary role, which will add significant experience to your CV and give you practical experience of:

  • leadership and management skills
  • working in the charity sector
  • strategic management experience
  • networking opportunities
  • mentoring from experienced professionals

Student Staff Vacancies

Student Union Development Coordinator Professional Placement Year (PPY)

Deadline for applications: 9th June 2019 
We are offering an opportunity for a Professional Placement Year student to undertake a placement for 9 – 12 months working directly with the CEO, senior staff and Board of Trustees at the heart of the Students’ Union. This is a unique opportunity to develop your academic interests in to practical experience.

 

Student Staff Team Members

Our student staff team are the backbone of the Union and a vital part of our shop, bar and kitchen teams. Typically our student staff work for between 2 - 15 hours per week during term time and will earn £7.70 per hour plus holiday pay.

We are about to recruit into our busy team for next academic year and are interested in hearing from you if you are: hardworking, reliable & enthusiastic and have experience of working in retail, bars or catering.

To apply for a role please bring yourself and a copy of your CV to our Recruitment Event on Wednesday 22nd May between 3 - 6pm in the SU Bar.

We will ask you to have a short interview on the day. Please allow for around 45 mins in total.

Selected applicants will then be invited back to a group interview on 29th May at 2.30 - 5pm.
