Following the success of their debut single ‘Sometimes’, which drew critical acclaim from CLASH to BBC Introducing, Stranger Stranger return with second single ‘Nation’. Written by the duo and produced by Steve Brown (Laura Mvula, Rumer), ‘Nation’ finds Stranger Stranger in a more upbeat setting, their raw, unfiltered harmonies layered above an underlying funk-laden groove courtesy of electric guitar flourishes and jazz-influenced brass.
‘Like all our songs, Nation is ambiguous. It' not about any one thing, it depends on who's hearing it and what's going on with them while they listen.” explain the pair. Stranger Stranger are vocalists and musicians Phil Solari and Marinda Lavut. Hailing from Toronto and London respectively, the duo display an innate skill for engaging songwriting and transcendent vocal harmonies. Phil and Marinda’s childhoods were filled with music non-stop, growing up around the diverse sounds of Wu-Tang Clan, Roots Manuva, Billie Holiday, Sly Stone and The Buena Vista Social Club. Their wide span of influences can be heard in their effortless fusion of folk and soul, with the occasional nod to South America and the intrinsic rhythm of hip-hop.
The pair have played together continuously since meeting eight years ago, learning their craft and hitting success while busking outside the Montreal Jazz Festival, where the owners heard them playing and promptly invited them in to play to the festival’s audience. Shortly afterwards the ears of Laura Mvula-producer Steve Brown came, and after listening to their music, Brown offered to pay for a trip to his London-based studio to record. Thus, Stranger Stranger’s debut EP was formed.
