AU Dinner and Societies Awards Evening update (Friday 3rd April)
We are sorry to announce that due to the current situation, the upcoming Athletic Union Dinner and Societies Awards Evening have both been cancelled.
We still want to celebrate all the great work of Clubs and Societies this year and are currently developing plans for virtual award ceremonies. Nominations will open on Wednesday 22 April and further information on the nomination process will be provided soon.
For those who have already bought AU Dinner tickets, you will be refunded automatically within 30 days. We are a small team so please bear with us - we will process refunds as quickly as possible.
We know this will be extremely disappointing news for so many of you and we can only apologise for this. We hope you will still be able to enjoy celebrating your achievements when we announce Athletic Union Award winners on Friday 15 May and Society Award winners on Friday 22 May.
Wednesday 1st April update
What are your Sabbatical Officers up to?
You might be wondering what we’ve been up over the past couple of weeks as we’ve all been navigating these challenging times. The silence doesn’t mean we haven’t been up to much, in fact we’ve been very busy, still representing each and every one of you.
Aside from creating the Corona Vibes Facebook page, where we are doing live work outs, posting cute animals and just generally having a great time(!), we have still been working hard behind the scenes to ensure your voices are being heard at every level.
Here’s an overview of some of the things we’ve been working on for you:
Some of the topics that have been discussed at the University's Planning Group over the last week include:
- Rent and living costs (cancelling the final rent instalment for students who have moved out of University owned and managed accommodation and the University are currently developing a dedicated hardship fund to help students who need financial support)
- Changes to the University’s approach to assessment and the introduction of a ‘no detriment’ policy
- Making sure all students have access to appropriate technology and the internet (laptops have been provided to those who need them and discussions are ongoing as to how we ensure all students have internet access)
- Discussing the wellbeing of all students and how students can access support, especially those still living in University accommodation (the University is currently arranging food deliveries for all students still living on Newton Park)
- Devising a campaign with the University of Bath Students’ Union to lobby private landlords to release students early from their contracts if they have moved out
Created the Corona Vibes Facebook page which has over 900 members to help maintain a community for Bath Spa students at this uncertain time
Working closely with the University’s communications team to make sure there are clear messages and updates going out to students, emphasising the need for transparency
Working closely with your Senior Academic Reps and Course Reps to ensure we understand the issues affecting your courses at this time
Taking part in conference calls to connect with other Students’ Unions across the country to share good practice and compare notes
Taking part in conference calls with the National Union of Students (NUS) to add our voice to the lobby of Government on some of the national issues students are currently facing
Working closely with Students’ Union staff to ensure you still get the same quality of services, just in a slightly different way
Working with the rest of the Students’ Union Trustee Board and senior SU staff to ensure the financial sustainability of the SU moving forward
Planning for upcoming by-elections and Club and Society committee member elections to ensure they still go ahead after the Spring Vacation
Liaising with the University’s Student Wellbeing Services to ensure you are still receiving the support you need
Hosting lots of Google Hangouts with students and staff to keep up to date with key issues
It is hard to list absolutely everything that we have been doing as it has all merged into one for us too at this time! We are working incredibly hard and we are still here to represent you.
Please feel free to get in touch to ask us anything or let us know if there’s anything you’d like us to share with you.

We have taken the difficult decision to postpone all Students’ Union events with immediate effect, until the end of April at the earliest.

Outdoor cinema screening of Shrek - We know many of you were disappointed when we were forced to postpone Shrek during Welcome Week 2019 due to the adverse weather conditions. We had planned to reschedule for after the Spring Vacation but this is no longer possible. Please bear with us - Shrek will be coming to a big screen near you as soon as practically possible!
Bath Spa Summer Ball 2020 on Friday 19th June - Information about Summer Ball was due to go out this week and tickets were due to be released on 1st April. This is all under review.
If we are unable to go ahead on 19th June 2020, we will ensure you are still able to celebrate the completion of this academic year in style, albeit at a later date. We are especially mindful of our graduating cohort who deserve to be able to fully celebrate their achievements and we will ensure their access to tickets are prioritised in future plans.
Our academic representation system will continue though this will now all be online. Your Vice President Education, Ceri Bailey, and Students’ Union staff will continue to liaise with the University and your Senior Academic Reps and Course Reps, particularly regarding changes in deadlines and assessments. Any queries, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We would encourage all students to continue using Unitu to raise any issues as they arise as we navigate the implications of becoming a virtual University together.
The Students’ Union By-Elections for the vacant Senior Academic Reps and Equality and Campaign Rep positions which are due to take place from 20th April to 1st May, will still go ahead, with all campaigning and voting online.
More information about the elections will be released in the coming weeks.
Clubs and Societies
All Club and Society activities have been cancelled until the Spring Vacation at the earliest. We encourage our Clubs and Societies to continue being active, despite not being able to meet in person, by using technology and getting creative!
All Committee elections due to take place after the Spring Vacation will go ahead and we will be in contact regarding arrangements in the coming weeks.

Monday 16th March
In response to the developing Coronavirus/Covid-19 situation, we are writing to provide an update on the actions your Students' Union is taking. This is a fast moving situation and we are basing our decisions on the latest advice available and the decisions taken by the University.
Your Sabbatical Officers are working very closely with the University at this time to ensure they are protecting the interests of students and minimising the impact of this disruption on your academic progression and success.
Following the University's announcement to move to online teaching and services from next week and the latest Government advice, we are reviewing the opening hours of our commercial services as follows:
The Students' Union Bar and Kitchen will close at 11pm on Monday 16 March until after the Spring Vacation.
The Students' Union Shop and Gym will remain open whilst there is sufficient demand and advice maintains that it is safe to do so. The Shop and Gym will no longer be open at weekends until further notice.
We ask that where possible, all payments within the Students' Union are made by card or mobile phone rather than by cash.
With immediate effect, we are cancelling all activities within Clubs and Societies until after the Spring Vacation.
This is an unprecedented situation and we understand it may be causing you some concern. Our Advice Centre will remain open to offer free, confidential, independent advice and wellbeing support. Please email email@example.com if you would like to speak to an adviser.
In line with the University's guidance, if you feel unwell and need to stay at home, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. The University are regularly updating their advice for students and staff so please keep checking their website for the latest information.
The physical and mental wellbeing of all our students remains our priority and we will keep you updated as further information becomes available.
