We started our roles back in July and you might be wondering what we have been up to over the summer. Well, the past couple of months has been a unique one for us as a Sabbatical Officer team. But, this has not stopped us from representing you or from planning for the next academic year. We’ve attended lots of training and conferences to help us get to grips with our role,  we have hosted regular Sabb Chats through our online Facebook community - Bath Spa Corona Vibes, we’ve represented you at lots (and we mean lots) of University pandemic planning meetings and we’ve continued our education on allyship and addressing unconscious bias.

And what about what we have done individually?

Students’ Union President - Emily Casey:

  • I am the SU representative on the University’s overarching Pandemic Planning Group, chaired by the Vice Chancellor.  These are monthly meetings where I am able to raise the issues many of you have contacted me about.

  • I was pleased to write my first article all about my induction experience for Wonkhe, a blogging and thinktank platform for Higher Education. You can have a read here:

  • Part of my role involves being a member of University Appeals Panels, ensuring a student perspective in decision making and I have attended a number of these meetings over the summer

  • I have started planning 2 main campaigns for the upcoming year (including one with your Vice President Education) so watch this space!

Vice President Education - Ceri Bailey:

  • Working with your Vice President Welfare and Community, I have further developed our campaign to decolonise the University. This is a big area of work and it’s been great to start to make some progress.

  • I have been an active member of the Learning and Teaching Pandemic Planning Group, ensuring the student voice is is represented on key decisions taken by the University this summer

  • I was a student panel member at a Wonkhe webinar for university staff focussed on student expectations - repping Bath Spa SU nationally!

  • Part of my role involves attending Academic Board - the highest academic decision making body at the University,  and this summer I have been involved in discussions on student regulations and the BAME awarding gap.

Vice President Opportunities - Jack Mapston:

  • I have been working closely with the University’s Careers team to secure funding to support your employability

  • I have attended various British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) South West meetings to plan what sports competition may look like this academic year

  • I have attended anti-racism forums and training events to better understand how to use my role to create change and I’m supporting our Athletic Union Presidents to make their clubs anti-racist

  • I have met with a number of students who are looking to set up brand new societies or networks - it’s one of the best bits of my job!

Vice President Welfare and Community - Megan Robertson:

  • I have been working with the University’s Student Wellbeing team to create a group of ‘Time to Change Champions’ to support positive mental health

  • I have trained all of our volunteer Equality and Campaign Reps to ensure they are supported to lead campaigns and ensure our diverse range of students are properly represented

  • I have planned my campaigns for the year including tenants’ rights, Black History Month, LGBTQ+ History Month and Interfaith Week

  • I was interviewed live on BBC Radio Wiltshire about the work of the Student Community Partnership and our fabulous students who donated unwanted goods when moving out of accommodation during lockdown.

This is just a flavour of some of our work, there is so much more we could tell you! Please feel free to get in touch to ask us anything or let us know if there’s anything you’d like us to share with you.
